More homes handed over at City, partner’s innovative R163m Greenville housing project

The City’s Human Settlements Mayoral Committee Member Councillor Carl Pophaim and officials in the directorate today, 12 October 2023, handed over 25 new Breaking New Ground (BNG) Greenville Phase 4 homes to qualifying beneficiaries. The project in Fisantekraal, Durbanville is expected to be completed by June 2025. It will provide more than 1 000 homes to qualifying residents and their families, some of whom are among the most vulnerable in the metro.
‘I am thrilled to be here today to hand over homes at this special project. The City is committed to handing over housing opportunities in areas across the metro to those who most need them. The housing need is acute and it is only by working together that we can begin to make a difference to the lives of beneficiaries, just like we are doing here today.
‘This is a very special project because of the alternative building technologies which are used during construction. We are always looking for new and innovative ways to deliver opportunities at our projects. This housing project makes use of Benex Block, which is an affordable, lightweight building block that makes the installation process simple and fast. Because of this, our partner Garden Cities is able to use skilled and unskilled labour from the surrounding community. We are hoping to use this technology in other City projects where possible.
‘In the 2023/24 financial year, the City has allocated R50 million toward this project. We thank all staff members, contractors and partners for making this project’s progress possible and today’s hand over a reality. Thank you to Garden Cities for their partnership and for delivering such an excellent project,’ said Councillor Pophaim.
Beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City's Housing Allocation Policy and Housing Needs Register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner that prevents queue jumping and to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation. The City's political office bearers do not have access to or influence over the Register and its qualifying beneficiaries.
